It can develop at any age even small children but mostly in younger adults where symptoms worsen over the years as the person gets older.

Some research has shown it may be generic where more than 50% of those with RLS have a family member suffering as well.

Pregnant women tend to suffer symptoms in the later part of their pregnancy and often go away after birth.

Medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, kidney disease or an iron deficiency has claimed to be associated with RLS. Treatment of these conditions can improve the symptoms.

RLS is often diagnosed as a sleeping disorder since it mostly occurs when the person is sleeping. It is unclear why the symptoms escalate at night or while sleeping. But, if you are not certain as to the reasons why you wake during the night or can’t sleep and can’t explain your symptoms to a doctor you may be diagnosed with a sleeping disorder instead of Restless Leg Syndrome.

Researchers believe a problem with the neurotransmitter dopamine in the nervous system is a contributing factor. Since iron is involved in the production of dopamine, people with an iron deficiency are more susceptible to having the symptoms.

A consultation with your doctor about your symptoms should be considered. Tests can determine if there is a more serious medical condition contributing to your Restless Leg Syndrome symptoms and then treatment can be discussed.

1

How I Give My Restless Legs Relief

Hi, my name is Susan.

I have been suffering from Restless Leg Syndrome or RLS for over 10 years. I am going to tell you my story and how I finally give my restless legs relief.

It started as me not knowing what it was and I would just refer to it as "my legs are bothering me".

I started noticing the problem while sitting on the couch watching tv or having a conversation I would suddenly stand up and rock back and forth on my legs. After getting strange looks I would just say "my legs are bothering me". The frequency of this was increasing to several times each evening.

Then I would start waking up while sleeping several times at night with these symptoms. Needless to say, I was very tired during the day.

I didn't know what it was until I started seeing the advertisements on tv for Requip. That was when I realized I had Restless Leg Syndrome.

I'm not a big fan of taking medications, so I started researching what else I could do to relieve my symptoms. I tried all kinds of sports drinks and bananas for the potassium which I saw on question boards. Didn't work.

What does work for giving my restless legs relief is stretching, squats, some messaging, a heating pad, and occasionally ibuprofen.

The heating pad I mostly use when I'm watching tv at home if I feel I need it. Also messaging my legs concentrating above the knee and calf. Sometimes my feet as well.

Right before I get into bed I'll do some leg stretches and squats. I'll do 8-10 squats putting my weight on my heels not the balls of my feet. Hang onto something if you have to so you don't fall.

I have found these squats to be very helpful in getting to sleep and staying asleep. It's not foolproof, sometimes my legs do wake me up. If that happens and I can't get back to sleep I'll get up and do some more squats. This usually helps me to sleep the remainder of the night.

Another thing I have found helpful is when I am in bed I stretch me legs as straight as they can go and tighten up all of my muscles in my legs. I hold it for about 10 seconds then relax and do it 2 more times.

I hope these restless leg syndrome remedies help you in your quest to find relief for your legs.

Click Here for helpfull products and books

1

What Kinds of Restless Leg Treatment is Available?

Since there is no cure for RLS, the available restless leg treatment is to try and relieve the symptoms to make you more comfortable.

If your symptoms are mild, treatment may consist of stretching exercises, warm baths or heating pad. Massaging the legs or vitamin supplements might also be considered.

After you've tried the exercises, massaging, etc. and still have symptoms that just won't lighten up you might consider medication.

Discuss with your doctor medications such as Requip or Mirapex. Other drugs used are similar to the ones used to treat Parkinson's disease which increase the neurotransmitter dopamine that affects movement.

In extreme cases pain medications can be useful. Since certain pain medications can be additive, caution should be used.

1

Is There a Cause for Restless Leg Syndrome?

A definite cause of Restless Leg Syndrome or RLS has not been found yet.

Many speculate as to what truly causes these symptoms.

Some think it's due to social behavior such as drinking alcohol, smoking, caffeine, or obesity that trigger these symptoms.

Others think RLS is associated with medications being taken such as some cold and allergy medications. Or anti nausea drugs, anti phychotic drugs, anti seizure drugs, or antidepressants may play a part.

Reseachers believe an imbalance of dopomine in the brain that controls movement is a leading cause of Restless Leg Syndrome.

It has also been suggested that some diseases such as Parkinson's disease, kidney disease, or diabetes may contribute to restless leg syndrome.

Deficiencies in iron ,potassium or anemia has also been suggested.

Fortunately, ongoing research is being done to understand, diagnose, and treat restless leg syndrome. Eventually they will find the answer.

Until they do find an answer on the cause and treatment of restless leg syndrome, the best we can hope for is to find how to relieve the symptoms.

1

Do I Have Restless Leg Syndrome?

Restless leg syndrome is also referred to as RLS. It is often described as an irresistible urge to move your legs to stop uncomfortable feelings or sensations.

It could be charaterized as antsy legs. Depending on the severity of your symptoms you may also experience burning, itching, insect like crawling in the legs.

Because your more active during the day, these symptoms often occur in the evening when your relaxed, just sitting, perhaps watching tv or reading. And at bedtime, when your laying down trying to sleep.

Then suddenly, you get this achy, antsy feeling in your legs where you need to stand up and walk around or stretch to relieve the feelings. Unfortunately, it's only a temporary relief. Since there is no cure, finding temporary relief remedies is better than no relief at all.

Since there is no test to diagnose RLS, a discussion with your doctor may be in order to determine if you have a sleep disorder or some other medical reason for these symptoms.

If your symptoms are mild you may not go to the doctor and just search for a remedy or relief on your own.

1

Can Sleeping with Socks on Affect RLS?

If you are sleeping with socks on in bed at night and discover your restless leg syndrome worsening you may want to change the kind of socks you use.

Lots of individuals put on socks to wear to bed to help keep their feet toasty.

Some put them on mainly in the winter months while some wear them throughout the year. Could the elastic be too tight to where it could possibly limit the blood circulation?

If you have a deep indentation of your skin at the elastic sight on your leg or if your leg cramps up during sleep they are often to too tight.

Test an uncomplicated solution and change your socks.

Switch to wearing a footie or perhaps a quarter crew sock which covers only your foot and ankle but nothing higher on your leg.

Or you might try compression socks or even bed socks made specifically for sleeping in socks.

These tend to not restrict blood flow and help with circulation.

Numerous RLS sufferers have claimed these types of socks help to decrease symptoms.

Although wearing socks in bed may well keep your feet warm they may irritate your restless leg syndrome symptoms.

Changing the type of sock you use may possibly help relieve these symptoms.

1

Disclosure

FULL COMPENSATION DISCLOSURE:

COMPENSATION DISCLOSURE

This Compensation Disclosure has been provided for your protection and to fully disclose any relationship between this sites product or service recommendations and the owners of those product or services.
